Choose your package

Both packages target Windows 10 version 1809 or newer and Windows 11 x64. Neither requests administrator rights.

Windows installer

Best for daily use. Installs per-user, uses automatically serviced Evergreen WebView2, and adds Start menu and Open With entries. User data is stored under %LOCALAPPDATA%\MarkDownEditor. Internet is needed only if WebView2 is missing; Setup fails clearly if it cannot install that prerequisite.

Best for USB, offline, and no-install use. Includes a WebView2 Fixed Runtime and keeps data beside the executable when the folder is writable.

Unsigned binaries: Windows SmartScreen may show “Windows protected your PC” on first run because the project does not yet have an Authenticode certificate. You can review the source, verify SHA256SUMS.txt, or build locally.

Local-first privacy and verified updates

Documents are rendered, edited, and exported locally. There is no analytics service, account, or document upload.
The app anonymously checks GitHub Releases and downloads an asset only after you choose Update. On first installation, Setup may download WebView2 from Microsoft if Windows does not already have it.
Update URL, size, GitHub SHA-256 digest, package structure, required files, and version are checked before application.
A strict Content Security Policy blocks scripts, plugins, base-URL changes, and automatic remote-image requests from opened documents.
Installed user data is preserved on uninstall. Portable fallback data under %TEMP%\MarkDownEditor can be removed manually.
